The Nonagon Association, represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, has participated today, in the workshop “Knowledge and innovation for a sustainable economy across the Atlantic”, which is a initiative from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), from the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT), from the University of Massachusets at Lowell (UMass Lowell) and also from TERINOV - Science and Technology Park in Terceira Island.
The opening session was chaired by the Regional Secretary for Science and Technology, Gui Menezes and counted with the participation of the Mayor of Angra do Heroísmo, José Meneses, Gabriela Queiroz who represented the University of the Azores and also with the Vice-President from FCT, José Paulo Esperança.
In addition, the event was also attended by the Regional Director of Science and Technology, Bruno Pacheco, António Cunha, Professor of the University of Minho and also the Coordinator of the Cooperation Project with UMass Lowell and by Julie Chen, Vice-Dean of UMass Lowell.
This initiative aims to initiate and define cooperation between the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and the National Scientific and Technological System, through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which relies on the need to value the interaction between the oceans, climate change and space, driven by the emerging methods of data science.
The meeting ended with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Foundation for Science and Technology and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. This collaboration comes under GoPortugal - Global Science and Technology Partnerships Portugal, an initiative that aims to stimulate scientific and business development, affirming Portugal in international terms through the scientific and economic valorization of an innovative agenda about “Atlantic Interactions”, which already integrates other partnerships with American universities.
This memorandum also seeks to foster the development of economic activities based on innovation and scientific research, mobilizing the Luso-American entrepreneurial community in the context of the AIR Center initiatives and the also the UN’s sustainable development goals.
The event is held at TERINOV - Science and Technology Park in Terceira Island.
